Introduction
Hello friends, I am Dr. Pradeep Suryavanshi, Director of the Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology at Sahyadri Hospital, Pune. Today, we will discuss the growth of newborn babies. Many mothers ask us if their baby’s growth is normal. Some feel their baby is getting too chubby, while others worry their baby looks too thin.
Normal Growth Patterns for Newborns
In Indian society, we often compare babies, but it’s essential to focus on individual growth patterns. A healthy newborn in India typically weighs between 2.8 to 3.4 kg, with girl infants slightly lighter, ranging from 2.7 to 3.2 kg.
Weight Doubling: By 5 months, a baby’s weight should double.
Weight Tripling: By 1 year, a baby’s weight should triple.
Weight Quadrupling: By 2 years, a baby’s weight should quadruple.
For example, if a baby’s birth weight is 3 kg, they should weigh around 6 kg at 5 months, 9 kg at 1 year, and 12 kg at 2 years.
Height and Weight Variations
A baby weighing 6 kg may appear chubby if they are short or thin if they are tall. Hence, comparisons between children should be avoided. Each child has a unique constitution and growth pattern, influenced by genetics inherited from their parents.
Breastfeeding and Initial Growth
Breastfeeding plays a crucial role in early growth. Exclusively breastfeeding for the first six months is recommended. Some babies reach 6 kg within the first three to four months, and those with a birth weight above 3 kg generally grow well. However, babies with a birth weight below 2.5 kg are likely to have slower growth, potentially reaching 7.5 to 8 kg by one year.
Importance of Growth Charts
It is essential to plot your baby’s growth on charts provided by your doctor. These charts help track whether your baby is growing appropriately. Concerns about a baby being too chubby or too thin should be addressed based on these growth charts.
Weaning Diet
After six months of exclusive breastfeeding, it’s time to introduce a weaning diet. This diet should be appropriate and balanced to ensure continued healthy growth.
