Introduction
Hello, I am Dr. Manisha Kulkarni, Senior Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at MomStory Hospitals, Hadapsar.
As your expected date of delivery approaches, one common question many mothers have is:
“When should I go to the hospital for delivery?”
Understanding the right signs can help you avoid delays and ensure a safe delivery for both you and your baby. Let’s look at the key symptoms that mean you should leave for the hospital immediately.
1. Recognizing True Labor Pain
The first and most important sign is labor pain.
How to identify true labor pain:
- Pain usually starts from the lower back
- It gradually moves toward the thighs
- Feels similar to menstrual cramps
- Occurs in regular intervals
Contraction pattern:
- Contractions occur every 10 minutes
- Each contraction lasts 20–40 seconds
- You may feel your uterus becoming hard and tight
- After the contraction, the abdomen becomes soft again
- In 10 minutes, you may experience 3–4 contractions
As labor progresses:
- Contractions become more frequent
- Pain intensity increases
Important sign:
If you notice mucus discharge mixed with blood (known as “show”) along with contractions, it indicates true labor.
Action: Go to the hospital immediately.
2. Water Breaking (Leaking of Amniotic Fluid)
Another key sign is leaking of fluid, which means the baby’s water bag has ruptured.
What you may notice:
- Sudden fluid discharge from the vagina
- Clothes becoming wet
- Confusion between urine and amniotic fluid
Action: Do not wait at home. Visit the hospital immediately, even if you’re unsure.
3. Reduced Baby Movements
Your baby’s movements follow a regular pattern.
Warning sign:
- If you notice reduced or no movements for 4–5 hours
- Movement pattern feels different than usual
Action: Seek medical attention immediately.
4. Bleeding with Abdominal Tightness
If you are near your due date and experience:
- Vaginal bleeding
- Tight, hard contractions in the abdomen
This could indicate a serious condition.
Action: Do not delay. Reach the hospital and go directly to the labor room.
When in Doubt, Don’t Wait
Even if you are unsure about any symptoms, it is always safer to get checked by your doctor. Timely medical care ensures the well-being of both mother and baby.
Conclusion
Knowing when to go to the hospital can make your delivery experience smoother and safer. Watch out for:
- Regular labor pains
- Water breaking
- Reduced baby movements
- Bleeding with contractions
If you experience any of these signs, do not stay at home, seek medical care immediately.
