Introduction
In this blog, Dr. Ganesh Badge, one of the best child specialist in Pune discusses about febrile seizures in children, including their causes, care, and management strategies.
What are Febrile Seizures?
Febrile seizures, commonly referred to as “fever seizures,” occur in children aged 6 months to 5 years during a fever. These seizures can cause loss of consciousness, mouth frothing, clenching of teeth, or generalized body movements. They typically last less than five minutes.
Types and Causes:
- Common Cause: The exact cause of febrile seizures is not well understood. However, a family history of seizures can increase the likelihood of occurrence in children.
- Triggers: Seizures are usually triggered by high fever due to infections such as bacterial infections or urinary tract infections. These seizures are generally benign and do not cause lasting brain damage or developmental issues.
When to Be Concerned
Risk Factors:
- Age: Children younger than 18 months are at higher risk.
- Family History: A family history of febrile seizures increases recurrence risk.
Management and Treatment:
- Initial Care: If a child has a fever, administer paracetamol and consider giving Clobazam as prescribed by your doctor.
- During a Seizure: Remain calm. Place the child in a recovery position on their side, loosen tight clothing, and if possible, record a video of the seizure. This can help your doctor determine the type of seizure.
Rescue Medication:
- Midazolam Spray: If the seizure lasts more than 2-3 minutes, use the prescribed rescue medication, Midazolam spray.
- Usage Instructions: Shake the spray and prime it if using for the first time. Administer the spray into each nostril according to your doctor’s dosage instructions.
Post-Seizure Care:
- Observe: Check the child’s breathing pattern and consciousness after the seizure. Consult with your doctor for further evaluation.
Conclusion
Understanding and managing febrile seizures is crucial for ensuring your child’s safety and well-being.
