Introduction
Hello, I am Dr. Archana Kankal from Sahyadri Hospital, Shastri Nagar, Nagar Road, Pune. Today, we will discuss an important topic: traveling during pregnancy. Many patients often inquire about travel restrictions even before planning their pregnancy.
Is Travel Safe During Pregnancy?
Firstly, it’s essential to understand that unnecessary travel during pregnancy should be avoided. While there’s no scientific evidence directly linking travel to miscarriages or bleeding, the stress and potential complications from travel-related activities are best avoided.
Travel Restrictions in Early Pregnancy
In the early stages of pregnancy, especially the first three months, there is a higher risk of bleeding due to hormonal changes or deficiencies. Travel can exacerbate this risk and create unnecessary stress if complications arise. Therefore, it is advisable to limit travel to only essential trips.
Deciding on Essential Travel
Essential travel can include visiting your hometown for important family events or emergencies. However, regular leisure trips, such as weekend getaways or international travel, should be minimized.
Types of Travel: Pros and Cons
Air Travel:
Air travel is generally safe up to 34-35 weeks of pregnancy. However, pregnant women might experience slight discomfort due to air pressure changes, such as ear pressure or increased nausea.
Train Travel:
Train travel is preferable due to minimal pressure changes and the ability to move around, reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). However, post-COVID, the sanitation levels in public transport have become a concern.
Road Travel:
Road travel is an option, but it’s crucial to ensure frequent stops for stretching and hydration to avoid prolonged sitting, which can increase the risk of DVT.
Addressing Common Myths
A common belief is that travel in the eighth month of pregnancy is risky. However, traveling in the seventh or ninth month poses similar risks. With advanced NICU facilities, the chances of managing a preterm baby are higher, but it’s essential to avoid unnecessary travel in late pregnancy.
