What Is Obstetrics, and How Is It Different From Gynaecology?
Obstetrics covers pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care. Gynaecology covers the health of the female reproductive system at every age, from first periods to menopause. Doctors trained in both are called OB-GYNs.
At Momstory you can see an obstetrician during pregnancy and return to the same hospital for gynaecological carebefore and after your pregnancies, from period problems and PCOS to menopause. If you are finding it hard to conceive, our IVF and fertility team can help.
Your Pregnancy Journey With Momstory
Before you conceive
A preconception consultation reviews your health, vaccinations and any conditions such as thyroid problems or diabetes, so your body is ready for pregnancy. Couples with a family history of genetic conditions, recurrent miscarriage or a blood-related marriage can ask about preconception genetic evaluation with our fetal medicine team. Pre-marital counselling is also available.
Antenatal care (ANC): regular check-ups from week one to delivery
Antenatal care is the series of check-ups, scans and tests that follow your pregnancy from start to delivery. Book your first visit as soon as your pregnancy is confirmed, ideally within the first 6 to 8 weeks. This visit confirms the pregnancy, estimates your due date (try our due date calculator), reviews your health and starts essential care.
Most women have monthly visits in the first two trimesters, fortnightly visits in the third trimester and weekly visits as the due date approaches. If your pregnancy needs closer monitoring, your doctor will see you more often.
| Trimester | What usually happens |
| First (up to about week 13) | Pregnancy confirmation, viability scan, nuchal translucency (NT) scan, double marker screening, baseline blood tests, thyroid and infection screening, advice on nutrition and supplements |
| Second (about weeks 14 to 27) | Anomaly scan, fetal echo scan where advised, vaccinations your doctor recommends, glucose tolerance test (GTT), routine blood and urine tests |
| Third (about week 28 to delivery) | Growth scan, non-stress test (NST), fetal Doppler, repeat blood and urine tests, birth planning and preparation for labour |

Delivery Options at Momstory
There is no single right way to give birth. The best option depends on your health, your baby’s position, how labour progresses and your preferences. Your obstetrician will talk through the options with you well before your due date.
Normal (vaginal) delivery
Many healthy women are suitable candidates for a normal delivery, and it is a particular focus of our maternity team. Normal delivery usually means an earlier return to daily activities, early skin-to-skin contact and a smoother start to breastfeeding. Our team monitors your labour and your baby throughout, and recommends a Caesarean only when it is the safer choice for you or your baby.
Several Momstory services help you prepare for and go through a normal delivery:
- Premoms antenatal classes cover the stages of labour, birthing options and newborn care
- Obstetric physiotherapy offers prenatal fitness, breathing and birthing postures, and perineal massage
- PLS doula services provide continuous emotional and physical support during labour
- Water therapy uses warm water to ease labour discomfort and promote relaxation
Painless delivery
Painless delivery uses medication to reduce the pain of labour while you remain awake. Your obstetrician and anaesthetist will explain how it works, its benefits and risks, and whether it suits you.
Water birthing
Momstory has a dedicated water birthing suite where labour and birth take place in a warm-water tub, designed to help you relax and ease stress and discomfort. Water birth is usually considered for low-risk pregnancies, and your obstetrician will assess whether it is safe for you.
Caesarean section
A Caesarean section is advised when a vaginal delivery is not considered safe for you or your baby. Common reasons include fetal distress, placenta-related complications, breech position, multiple pregnancy and prolonged labour. The decision is always based on medical need and the safety of both of you.
Delivery Packages and Room Categories
Our delivery packages cover your stay, delivery and postnatal care, with a choice of room categories at each location. Celebration extras such as cake cutting, a baby photoshoot, a baby bag, hand and foot prints, a gift hamper, car decoration and welcome-home décor are part of the Momstory experience. Inclusions vary by package, so ask our team for the current list.
| Location | Room categories |
| Shivajinagar | Private room, Deluxe room, Suite room, Family suite, Presidential suite |

High-Risk Pregnancy Care and Fetal Medicine
A pregnancy is called high risk when a health condition or pregnancy factor raises the chance of complications for you or your baby. High risk does not automatically mean a Caesarean or an early delivery. It means closer monitoring and specialist input.
Common reasons include diabetes or gestational diabetes, high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia, thyroid disorders, twins or multiple pregnancy, placenta previa, age above 35, a previous preterm birth or Caesarean, and pregnancy after IVF.
Our high-risk pregnancy and fetal medicine teams work with obstetricians, neonatologists, anaesthetists and critical care specialists to plan your care. Services include:
- Detailed fetal scans, NT scan, anomaly scan and fetal echo scan
- Growth scans and Doppler studies to check your baby’s growth and blood flow
- First trimester screening, dual marker screening and genetic counselling
- Prenatal genetic testing where indicated, including NIPT, CVS and amniocentesis
- Management of gestational diabetes, hypertension in pregnancy, twin pregnancy and IVF pregnancy
Newborn Care: NICU, PICU and Human Milk Bank
Our Level III NICU cares for premature, low-birth-weight and critically ill newborns, with 18 beds at Shivajinagar, 20 at Nagar Road and 14 at Hadapsar. It is supported by neonatologists and NICU-trained nurses and offers:
- Ventilator support including HFOV, and continuous cardiac and respiratory monitoring
- Therapeutic hypothermia, advanced phototherapy and total parenteral nutrition
- Kangaroo mother care, lactation support and family-centred care
- ROP screening, newborn hearing assessment and metabolic screening
Our Human Milk Bank supplies screened and pasteurised donor milk for premature and sick babies who cannot get enough of their mother’s milk. For older infants and children, our 9-bed PICU provides round-the-clock critical care.
